It is early dawn in the great province of kerala. Houseboat is a country craft better known as "Kettuvallom" in Malayalam language. These boats were used for the transportation of goods from the isolated villages to the towns in the yester years. With the emergence of more sophisticated transportation, this became less popular. Now these "Kettuvalloms" are back again as a major tourist attraction with lots of modification in the architecture. It is about 70 feet long and has a width about 14 feet in the middle and tapers at the ends.
All these "Kettuvalloms" are being made of wood, bamboo mats, bamboo poles and coir mats etc. The main wood used to manufacture is Arotocarpus. A small engine generally powers the Houseboats. The boats are fully furnished to attract the tourists. Having one bedroom House boat for two persons, two bedroom House boat for four persons and three bedroom House boat for six persons. Apart from furnishing they have sun-bathing deck, a spacious living room with front view, comfortable bamboo chairs suitable for chitchat, a well-built kitchen, and European model toilets for the convenience of the tourists.
Traditional lanterns or Electrical lights are using as lights for illumination. Some boats having air-conditioned rooms. Each houseboat has three crewmembers. Captain, Engine operator and Cook. The cook prepares fresh food onboard. The cuisine includes traditional Kerala flavors along with local specialties.
